Notices from Other U3A Organisations

www.openwriting.co.uk

Hello, I am Peter Hinchliffe (72), a retired journalist who worked for daily newspapers in England, the United States and Kenya – and I still enjoy working with words.  I am now Editor of a web magazine - Open Writing , a just-for-fun Web site. The only cash involved is that which I pay every year to keep the site running.

I lead a writing and reminiscing class, "Remember When", for Huddersfield U3A where there are currently 35 in the class.  We meet on 20 weeks in the year in Huddersfield Town Hall and we are nearing the end of our 14th year.

I am writing to publicise my daily Web magazine because I would like help in encouraging more people to read Open Writing, and perhaps also to write for it.  My principal aim is to bring worthwhile words to a worldwide readership.

Lots of words written by class members have been published in Open Writing – articles, poems, stories, slices of autobiography.  So too have words written by the members of U3A groups in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and all parts of Britain.

Open Writing includes writing from people of all ages with contributions coming in regularly from every continent; new material has been published every day for the past four years.

The magazine now contains nearly 7,000 items and hundreds of folk in all parts of the world click in every day to read what we offer.

Type the words "Open Writing" in the Google search box and you will see that we come top of more than 225,000,000 entries.

**    I would be very grateful if you could publicise www.openwriting.co.uk on any Web site you run, and also mention it in news letters.

**    I welcome articles, stories and poems from your members.

**    I will consider serialising books – fiction and non-fiction.

**   I am always on the lookout for new columnists – around 500 words a week – bringing a personal and entertaining view on the world and its ways.

Thank you for any help you can give.

If you wish to discuss anything relating to Open Writing, let me have a phone number and I will gladly call you.

Peter Hinchliffe, Editor

Book ‘Questions of music’ - ISBN 978-1-84728-090-9

Hello everyone.    I am a member of  Malvern U3A and have recently self-published (through the  Lulu organisation) a book called ‘Questions of music‘ .   It comprises the Author‘s background introduction - selling records into the Liverpool and North Wales dealers during the sixties for Decca and EMI prior to running my own specialist retail record shop - Counterpoint - in Malvern for 23 years. Then there are 101 classical CD recital programmes each with its own theme/subject matter and usually a simple anagram or word game involved, notes and/or anecdotes linking the items, and finally some personal musical musings -occasionally controversial.

The book was designed to assist in the compiling of recital programmes, provide ideas for such, and add some extra elements.

It can be accessed on the net - just type www.lulu.com into the your web browser address box.  When the Lulu site opens,  enter Questions of music or ISBN No. into the search box, click on title, click preview and scroll down the entire 101 programme index - progressing through via the side arrows.  It comes in at 275 pages- £12-50, but I am discounting it to UK U3A members at £11-00 including postage and packing. I am sure this will be of interest to members who run music groups. I append my details below.
