Birdwatching

The group will probably meet next at the Golden Lion, Stithians on the west side of the reservoir on a Thursday evening during September, in the hope of seeing  some of the arrivals of migrating birds.  The bird hide there is suitable for whatever weather there is on the day.   New members always welcome - do give me a call!

Bridge

Rubber Bridge continues every Monday morning at 09.45am at the Royal British Legion in Truro, presently under the watchful eye of Graham Lawson.  Beginners' and Improvers' Bridge classes are held at Richard Lander School on Thursday evenings, with students being nurtured by Philip de la Haye and Malcolm Parker.

Graham Lawson has recently taken over Duplicate Bridge, at Epiphany House, Truro each Thursday, starting at 6.30 pm.   This is an ideal step for Improvers, who are just finishing their course.  If you don't have a partner, we will match you up!  All new members are welcome.

Carrick Bells

Recently, six of us went walkabout to a "Ringing Round the Region" session at Wilcove, Torpoint, organised by the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain.  This was very new for us, but also very enjoyable.  It began with lunch together with all the other participating teams (about a hundred people), surrounded by bells of absolutely all sizes. We then took turns for each team to play a solo (a new experience for , interspersed with "massed ringing" - all one hundred of us rehearsing the same music, with conductor Robert Willis in full spate: quite impressive!

After a break for "bellringers' tea", we continued with the finale, a run-through of all the pieces we had prepared, after which we tottered home exhausted but feeling we had really achieved something!

The next week we were performing at Langholme Residential Home, which was quite different, but just as fulfilling in its way.  Meantime as I write, Marjorie Roach is in hospital, having undergone a hip replacement operation - all good wishes to her for a speedy recovery for all of the team.

Celtic Ringers

On Saturday 6 March, Celtic Ringers entertained the Falmouth Torch group at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Torch Fellowship groups meet informally on a monthly basis across the UK. Run with a friendly Christian ethos by local volunteers, they provide an opportunity for meeting up with others who are living with the challenges of sight loss. They are open to all- Christian and un- churched, blind and sighted alike.

As it was the 30th Anniversary of the Falmouth Torch group, Celtic Ringers started with ‘Happy Birthday’. This was a piece of music especially arranged for them by one of their players, Lyn Chapman.

The next piece of music was ‘St Anthony’s Chorale’ by Brahms, followed by that popular hymn, ‘Lord of the Dance’. This was followed by Beethoven’s’ Pastoral Symphony’.

After a short break for Celtic Ringers, they played Strauss’s’ Emperor Waltz’, followed by ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’, which is quite a difficult piece. ‘With Cat like Tread’ from Gilbert & Sullivan’s. ‘Pirate of Penzance followed.

The bell team were then invited to sit down whilst their leader, Moira McCullough read a poem by David Prowse.

In the last part of the concert, Celtic Ringers played, ‘Caribbean Carnival’, ‘Green Bushes’ and that well known Cornish piece, ‘Song of the Western Men’. This is also called, ‘Trelawny’.   After a vote of thanks from Falmouth’s Torch group, Celtic Ringers were invited to stay for the Birthday tea, which was enjoyed by all.

Choir

The choir is closing on a high note next week for the Summer with a short recital in Liz Grant's Garden.  Six short pieces have been practised and we have been  seduced and encouraged to feel confident.  Just a very few friends will be listening, together with the neighbours!

If you have been wondering whether or not to join the choir, it is great fun and on September 1st we shall meet as usual in Perranarworthal Church and Church Hall at 2pm for the Autumn session.

Computer Studies Group

Restarts on September 30th

As we said in the July newsletter, as well as the drop-in element of our computer group, which will continue with added hints and tips short inputs, we also feel there is a need for four-week sessions on slightly more advanced topics.

The first topic will be “Getting started - Making a web site with DreamWeaver”. This will be on 30th September, 7th, 14th, 21st October.

After half term, 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th November will be on “Getting a bit more from Microsoft Word”  including short cuts, inserting tables and objects and mail merge. (Get your address labels ready for Christmas!)  If you’re not sure how to start putting all the addresses in a simple Excel file then e-mail either of us for simple instructions.) The further sessions up to Christmas will be by negotiation.

Don’t forget that we have an on-line yahoo group on e-mail, where members can put computing questions to others, in the hope that they too have had the same problem and can help. Either e-mail Angela with a request to join or go to http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/u3acomputergroup and request membership.

I will be at Richard Lander School, Room 119, from 4.00pm on September 9th, checking out all is ready for us. If you have not used the school’s network previously, please let me know that you intend to come along by then, so that I can ensure that you have a user name assigned on the system.

Croquet Group

Last season was great fun and very successful.  The Croquet Group hopefully justified the tremendous support, to enable us to expand, that we had from Chairman Tony and the Carrick U3A Committee.  We were averaging 20 players a week and occasionally had over 30.  I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to Peter for the huge contribution he makes to the running of the Group.

Any member of Carrick U3A is most welcome to join the Croquet Group.  It really does not matter if you’ve never played before.  Friendly help and advice is always at hand. Do not worry if you miss the first session or can’t attend regularly.   As an experiment, this year there is no need to sign up at the start of the season.  Just turn up!   We play on Wednesdays from 10.00 am to 12 noon at Perranarworthal Cricket Club ground.

On Wednesdays, the Group play the less technically demanding Golf croquet rather than Association croquet.  It’s great fun and the misses are just as enthusiastically cheered as the good shots.   Occasionally on Friday evenings, a few of us are learning to play Association croquet and anyone who might be interested in this please let me know.

U3A Allotments:

The allotment group have completed putting up a fence around our allotment site and we are all hoping that it is now rabbit proof.  Just in case, we have a plan “B”.

The ground has been turned over and everything is now ready for cultivation to begin. One 40ft by 33ft site remains, fenced and rotovated, awaiting an enthusiastic owner.  Is there anybody out there who would like to seize this great opportunity?

If so, give me a call, (01872 864874),  or drop me an e-mail.

Helston & District U3A Launches!

The Inaugural Meeting of the Helston and District U3A was held at the Godolphin Social Club Helston on Tuesday morning October 13th 2009.  The new U3A got off to a good start with some 60 people present. Ian Searle and David Neale spoke about the Third Age Trust and the local U3A organisation, and Marion Tapp and Tony Herring talked about the sort of things that are going on in Kerrier North and Carrick U3As. The meeting agreed unanimously to press on with the new Helston U3A, with a further meeting set to enrol additional members.

Carrick U3A has been involved with this project. A few months ago Marion and Mike Tapp organised one of our "Short Walks" around Helston, and on this occasion the local people from Helston agreed to form a Steering Committee for the new U3A. Marion and Mike continued to help the Steering Committee, and Margaret Hopkins, the acting Chairman thanked them for their support. Carrick is also holding the "Start-Up Grant" from the Third Age Trust, and will continue to do so for a short time until Helston has organised a Treasurer and a bank account.

History Group

The History Group met at the British Legion on July 20th. Tony Goulden gave an interesting talk about "Cornish Railways", illustrated by a large number of slides. He explained that the Newham station in Truro was linked to Redruth and Penzance by the West Cornwall Railway in 1855.

The Cornwall Railway arrived in Truro in 1859 and the two systems were then linked at Penwethers Junction. We saw pictures of many twentieth century locomotives, and pictures of branch lines like the one from Chacewater to Newquay that were closed by the Beeching cuts.

The next History meeting will be in the British Legion at 2pm on Tuesday September 21st. Roger Radcliffe will be talking about "The Search for the Lady Agnes". We are looking for more speakers for the History Group in the autumn. Any offers?

Opera & Other Music

"Opera and Other Music" is perhaps a silly title. Originally we did a mix of music, but then we settled down to watching opera DVD or VHS tapes on my television set.

   July 13th "Don Giovanni" DVD

Trip to see "The Gondaliers" at Minack Theatre - September 17th

Our small Opera Group met on February 8th. and listened to a very good DVD of Strauss' "Fledermaus" by the Bavarian Opera Company (with the "Thunder and Lightning Polka" interpolated into Act Two).

Philosophy Group

Do you prefer questions or answers?

When people ask how you are, I’ve learnt to my cost never to reply: ‘In what respect do you mean?’  They usually think you’re being facetious and say: ‘Oh, just forget I ever asked’ or simply change the subject.  They may even cross the street when next they see you coming.  Actually, it seems surprising that talking about one’s feelings, or for that matter about religion or politics, are still taboo subjects.  We’re on safer grounds conversing about impersonal matters, while trying to avoid upsetting those who may have opinions that differ from our own.

But isn’t this kind of social etiquette a serious barrier to communication and hence to real friendship?  Surely it ought to be possible to agree to disagree about whatever one thinks or feels without getting upset about it and resorting to games of one-upmanship.  With an open mind we might even learn something from the contrary opinion of others.  After all, how many have fallen on the battlefields of history because of their unerring loyalty to questionable beliefs?  For those who think there is a serious danger in their own thoughts and feelings turning into obsessions, questions are probably more important than answers.

In my quest to find kindred spirits who think this way, I decided to start up a U3A Philosophy group.  That was over a year ago and, surprise, surprise - we’re still going strong.  About twelve of us have been meeting up regularly, on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month, in order to question not only the beliefs of others but our own too.  Questions, of course, lead to answers but answers in turn lead to more questions.  You may see this as a pointless game for the pathologically inquisitive – like a dog chasing its tail – but it’s been an enlightening experience and an enjoyable one too.  Of course we’ve had our disagreements but they’ve never turned into arguments and everyone’s personal thoughts and feelings about the subjects we’ve been discussing have been welcomed with interest.  After all, people are invariable more worthwhile than their beliefs.

Some of the topics and questions we’ve tried to find answers to so far have included: ‘What is morality?’, ‘What is consciousness?’, ‘Is free will an illusion?’, ‘A personal summary of Wittgenstein’s philosophy’, ‘Ludwig Boltzmann – physicist and philosopher’, ‘The mysterious world of memes’ and ‘What value – belief?’

So, if notes on any of these topics interested you, please let me know (by email )…  or perhaps I should never have asked!     john@faupel.fsworld.co.uk

We meet at my place (4 miles SW of Truro) from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm every second and fourth Wednesdays of the month but, due to limited seating and car parking space, we're not currently looking for any new members.     This write-up, my first since starting the group over a year ago,  is for information purposes only, although I'm happy for anyone to email or phone me on (01872) 561301 or 561628) about joining at some future date.

Walking Groups

U3A Carrick has run weekly walking groups since 1990, when a group was formed by Stan Grey.  Two members joined Stan on the first walk, gradually growing to fifteen. The formula which Stan initiated is still more or less followed today although recently there have been more than fifty walkers on occasions who have enjoyed getting to know and appreciate Cornwall’s  wonderful bridle ways, coastal and  inland footpaths.

When our numbers reached fifty, it was decided to form two further walking groups:  a shorter one for those who were finding the stiles and steep parts a bit much and a longer one for the fit and active!   All groups meet on Fridays.

Sorry, dogs are not allowed on any of our regular walks!

Tehidy Woods - On a Short Walk

Current groups are:

Ramblers   Group Leader  - Jumping  Gill Warden  01872 864603

Walks are usually 3.5 - 5 miles long and last around 2 - 2.5 hours and are mostly circular but are  sometimes linear routes.  Afterwards, disperse or join together for a convivial meal, as preferred ! Each person is responsible for his/her safety and is advised to wear suitable footwear.

Short Walks   Leader - Meandering Mike Tapp   01209 820301

1st and 3rd Friday of the month, calendar of walks is published on the inside back cover of the newsletter. Meet at 10.00 a.m. for 10.40 a.m. start.  Walks are 2.5 – 3 miles long and aim to be fairly level and stile free if possible.

Day Walks     Leader - Rolling Roger Green  01872 862803

1st Friday of the month (may be more frequent in summer).  Calendar of walks is published on inside back cover of the newsletter.   Look out for starting times as they may vary according to venue.  These longer walks are for those who like a challenge!

Length of walk 7 – 10 miles with a picnic lunch en route. Good footwear required.
