Table Tennis - Christmas Party

We had our usual Christmas tea party in the Community Lounge at Richard Lander School at the end of our Table Tennis session on December 17th.

The main guests were Steven Mulcahy, the new headmaster, and Phil Gilbert, the deputy head in charge of community relations. Sue Towersey, who does the bookings for us, and Geoff Moon, who sorts out any day-to day problems, were also there. We had collected from the Table Tennis Group, the Line Dancers, the Computer Group, and the Bridge and Games Groups, and we were able to give the masters, Sue and Geoff and the caretakers some Christmas presents. Dave Walton made the presentations and said how much we appreciated the use of the school premises and the school's equipment.

Table Tennis (1) continues to be well attended on at 2.00pm on Wednesday afternoons in the Richard Lander Community Room.  We now have a Second Table Tennis Group (2), also playing at Richard Lander on Mondays, at 4.00pm.    We have had recent matches with both Wadebridge U3A at the Table Tennis Centre at St. Austell, and with Kerrier U3A at the YMCA at Redruth.

Scrabble - Falmouth!

The Scrabble Group in Falmouth has been restarted from Pamela Standring's home in Mawnan Smith.   She can take up to twelve members, who should ring her in the first instance: 01326 250460.  Meetings will be 2.00 - 4.30pm  on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays.  If another day proves to be more popular it may then change.   Pamela would like members to park in the road and not on the drive.

It is anticipated there will be no meeting on 24th December!

Inter-Group Quiz with Kerrier North U3A

We had one of our occasional quizzes at Richard Lander School on October 30th. We were joined by some friends from Kerrier North U3A, and altogether there were about 48 of us there. Bill Dodge, who organised the party from Kerrier, produced some musical recordings which we had to name. Bill Brown and John Pollock brought along some excellent sets of questions.

After tea, Mollie Potter asked some musical questions. She then played on the piano; we had to identify the tunes and in some cases, sing along with her. It was an enjoyable afternoon and we hope to repeat it in the not too distant future!

Garden Group

The Garden Group met at Richard Lander School on November 18th. and Peter Blake gave us a most interesting talk about "Creating a Fertile Soil". He said that most plants benefit from a base dressing each spring, and that for Cornwall the ideal fertiliser is a mixture that contains one part of nitrogen, one part of phosphate and one and a half parts of potash. By far the cheapest and best balanced is "Main Crop Potato" fertiliser applied at a rate of three ounces to the square yard. National Growmore  can be used at six ounces to the square yard, but needs to be supplimented with half an ounce of sulphate of potash per square yard.

He said that well-rotted compost and good quality stable manure help to improve the texture and water-holding properties of the soil. He recommended digging in ten pounds of compost per square yard each year. He said that the acidity of the soil should be checked with a simple meter and lime only added when there is an obvious need. He showed us how to make a compost heap, and said that adding some lime and ammonium sulphate would help to get the bacteria working.

It was an enjoyable morning and we hope Peter will talk to us again before too long!

I’m there every Thursday accompanied by 2 or 3 other computer minded people and we’d rather be kept busy, so do come along!

Another means of help is our online self help group: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/u3acomputergroup/

Or email me for an invite to join angelashields@trevethan.demon.co.uk

Computer Discussion Group

This group is for everyone – not just computer geeks!   At our last meeting we had great fun exploring how to get photos from our mobile phones as well as playing with photos generally. Next month, (Tuesday, January 6th, 9.00 for 9.30 am in the Community Lounge, Richard Lander), the main topic will be “Getting more from the Internet or, what can Google do for you?” The general discussion ranges widely over computer matters – if you’ve a computer problem - bring it along, someone might just have a suggestion that would help! All are welcome!

Our Intrepid Cycling Group Takes a Wrong Turn!

Bugle to Eden, a gentle 3.5 mile roll! No steep hills, mostly cycle way away from traffic……. It is if we all hadn’t turned left instead of right at the largest signpost on the trail!    Maybe it was because there were 13 of us, or was it a fiendish plot to divert to the pub in Luxulyan?

Eden was reached by some, diversions were made by others, and the sanctuary of the car park reached by all. The nature of the group is that we can chose whether we push on or not, and that seems to suit us. The group meets fortnightly on Tuesdays.

Why not join us in our next adventure?  Call Les  Moulson  01209822074 or  07951403111 les@moulson2.orangehome.co.uk for time & venue details.

PS.   I have been offered a gent's All Terrain bike for sale, exactly the same as mine, except unused .

I also have a  small-framed lady’s mountain bike if anyone is interested. Small framed bike, that is!

Anyone interested?

Bridge

There are now three Bridge Groups in Carrick U3A. Rubber Bridge continues every Monday morning at 10am at the Royal British Legion in Truro under the watchful eye of Peter Pisarski.  Beginners' and Improvers' Bridge classes are held at Richard Lander School on Thursday evenings with students being nurtured by Philip De la Haye and Malcolm Parker.

Graham Lawson has recently taken over Duplicate Bridge at Epiphany House, Kenwyn, Truro at 7.00pm on Thursday evenings.  This is an ideal venue for Improvers who are just finishing their course.  If you don't have a partner, we will match you up!  All new members are welcome.  There is ample parking here.

Carrick Bells

Marjorie Roach proudly showing off our brand new F bell, partly funded by donations made at various Carrick Bells' gigs around the county.

On Saturday October 11th the Carrick Bells were guests of honour at the Veryan Parish Harvest Supper.  The team, looking very professional in their uniforms, enjoyed a splendid meal with the parishioners before giving a very varied and enjoyable concert.  Despite the absence of their leader and conductor Marjorie Roach, the team performed with their usual enthusiasm and flair. The tunes varied from the traditional folk song ‘Widdecombe Fair’ to ‘The March of the Toy Soldiers’ from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. The programme was evidently much enjoyed by the audience with many of them humming or singing along.  The evening concluded with a vote of thanks given by Gerald Johns and a resounding round of applause from the audience.

Is there anyone out there who might be interested in getting a dozen or so newcomers going?     Do get in touch...

Travellers' Tales

We meet on the second Monday of each month at the Conservative Club, Lemon Street between 10.00am - 12.00 noon.  On Monday, 13th October, Bobby Harbisher spoke to the group about a tour of New Zealand and a short visit to Australia.

History Group

Clive Benney came along to Richard Lander on the afternoon of November 18th. and talked to 25 members of the History Group about "Jericho to Cligga". This was a fascinating talk about Trevellas and the nearby coast and countryside, and was illustrated by many photographs taken at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century.

Clive has recently been given some old photographic slides and medical equipment belonging to the Whitworth medical dynasty at St. Agnes, and has prepared another lecture based on these. He gave us a little taste of this and we are hoping that he will come back to give us the full version in the spring.

There are also tentative plans for a visit to St. Agnes Museum after it reopens at Easter (probably on April 21st.)   It may be possible to combine that with a visit to the tin reclamation site in Trevellas valley.

John Collins is to talk to a combined meeting of the History and Science Groups at Richard Lander, on Tuesday, December 9th at 2.15pm, on the subject of  "Public Health in Victorian Truro".   On Tuesday, January 20th, at Richard Lander at 2.00pm, Bob Wicks will be talking to the History Group about "The History of Malta"

We have again been invited to have a U3A Carrick stall at the Mayor's Charity Day. This will be on Lemon Quay in Truro from 9.30am until 4.00pm on Friday, December 5th.

We shall just be offering information about U3A Carrick activities, together with Membership Packs.   We shall need a rota of people to man the stall.  If any members feel like volunteering for a stint, perhaps they would contact Dave Neale.

Philosophy Group

Do you prefer questions or answers?

When people ask how you are, I’ve learnt to my cost never to reply: ‘In what respect do you mean?’  They usually think you’re being facetious and say: ‘Oh, just forget I ever asked’ or simply change the subject.  They may even cross the street when next they see you coming.  Actually, it seems surprising that talking about one’s feelings, or for that matter about religion or politics, are still taboo subjects.  We’re on safer grounds conversing about impersonal matters, while trying to avoid upsetting those who may have opinions that differ from our own.

But isn’t this kind of social etiquette a serious barrier to communication and hence to real friendship?  Surely it ought to be possible to agree to disagree about whatever one thinks or feels without getting upset about it and resorting to games of one-upmanship.  With an open mind we might even learn something from the contrary opinion of others.  After all, how many have fallen on the battlefields of history because of their unerring loyalty to questionable beliefs?  For those who think there is a serious danger in their own thoughts and feelings turning into obsessions, questions are probably more important than answers.

In my quest to find kindred spirits who think this way, I decided to start up a U3A Philosophy group.  That was over a year ago and, surprise, surprise - we’re still going strong.  About twelve of us have been meeting up regularly, on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month, in order to question not only the beliefs of others but our own too.  Questions, of course, lead to answers but answers in turn lead to more questions.  You may see this as a pointless game for the pathologically inquisitive – like a dog chasing its tail – but it’s been an enlightening experience and an enjoyable one too.  Of course we’ve had our disagreements but they’ve never turned into arguments and everyone’s personal thoughts and feelings about the subjects we’ve been discussing have been welcomed with interest.  After all, people are invariable more worthwhile than their beliefs.

Some of the topics and questions we’ve tried to find answers to so far have included: ‘What is morality?’, ‘What is consciousness?’, ‘Is free will an illusion?’, ‘A personal summary of Wittgenstein’s philosophy’, ‘Ludwig Boltzmann – physicist and philosopher’, ‘The mysterious world of memes’ and ‘What value – belief?’

So, if notes on any of these topics interested you, please let me know (by email )…  or perhaps I should never have asked!     john@faupel.fsworld.co.uk

We meet at my place (4 miles SW of Truro) from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm every second and fourth Wednesdays of the month but, due to limited seating and car parking space, we're not currently looking for any new members.     This write-up, my first since starting the group over a year ago,  was for information purposes only, although I'm happy for anyone to email or phone me on (01872) 561301 or 561628) about joining at some future date.

Photography Group

The U3A Photography Group have now settled into our new venue, Carnon Downs Village Hall Annexe.  This is permanent, (as much as anything ever is), thanks to the approval by the U3A Carrick Committee.  We continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at 9:30am.

Our first meeting in our new venue on 11 November was a well attended illustrated debate "Can photography be regarded as an art form".  The 21 attendees agreed a tentative "yes" after a penalty shoot-out.  The 25 November meeting was much more prosaic, being centred around "bring your camera, your (photography related) problems and your home-made Christmas cards".  The "problem corner" theme was so popular that we might make it a semi-permanent feature of meetings.  Our collective range of knowledge and experience is so wide that however dumb your question, there always seems to be someone else glad to know the answer, and always someone with an answer (often three people with different answers!).

We next meet on 9th December and then our New Year activities kick off  on 13 January, looking at members' images of the sea and boats, and debating what sort of tweaks it is "right" (or permissible or possible) to perform on photographs after you have taken them.  Click Group Programme for our detailed schedule on forthcoming activities

Reading Group 2 (Truro)

Our next meeting will be on Monday 15th December. Could those members who have not put forward their choice of three books yet, either let me have it before the next meeting, or bring it along on the day.  If anyone doesn’t want to put forward titles for selection, we would still like you to come along and help us choose.

We still have space for a couple more members.  Telephone: 01872 240378 or Mobile 07768 455352 for further information.    E-mail: eileen.tozer@btinternet.com

Poetry and Play Reading Group, Truro

We are not planning to meet in December but will restart at 10.30am on Friday January 30th. at 19, Penwethers Lane.  We will be discussing Robert Browning and reading some of his poetry. There is room for another couple of members in this group.  Next year we intend to talk about a different poet each time.

Tony Herring, 28th November

Science Group

The next meeting at Richard Lander at 2.15pm will be on Tuesday, December 9th, when John Collins will talk to a joint meeting of both the Science and History Groups about "Public Health in Victorian Truro". This should be of interest to Scientists, but also to those who want to learn about the past history of Truro.

Jeremy Williams has agreed to talk about "Wood" to the Science Group at Richard Lander School on Tuesday January 13th, at 2.00pm .

  U3A Carrick Walking Groups

U3A Carrick has run a weekly walking group since 1990  when a group was formed by Stan Grey.  Two members joined Stan on the first walk, gradually growing to fifteen. The formula which Stan initiated is still more or less followed today although recently there have been more than fifty walkers on occasions who have enjoyed getting to know and appreciate Cornwall’s  wonderful bridle ways, coastal and  inland footpaths

When numbers reached fifty last year , it was decided to form two more walking groups;  a shorter one for those who were finding stiles and steep parts a bit much and a longer one for the fit and active!

All groups meet on Fridays.

The current groups are:

Ramblers   Group Leader  - Jumping  Gill Warden  01872 864603

Weekly walks, the calendar is published on the back page of the newsletter one month in advance and anyone is welcome to join us on an ad hoc basis.

Meet at the published parking place at 10.30 a.m. for an 11.a.m. start.

Walks are usually 3.5 - 5 miles long and last around 2 - 2.5 hours and are mostly circular but are  sometimes linear routes.  Afterwards, disperse or join together for a convivial meal, as preferred ! Each person is responsible for his/her safety and is advised to wear suitable footwear.

Sorry but dogs are not allowed

Short Walks   Leader - Meandering Mike Tapp   01209 820301

1st and 3rd Friday of the month, calendar of walks is published on the inside back cover of the newsletter. Meet at 10.00 a.m. for 10.40 a.m. start.  Walks are 2.5 – 3 miles long and aim to be fairly level and stile free if possible.

Margaret Ho-Sang & Betty   01326 314777

Sorry but dogs are not allowed

Day Walks     Leader - Rolling Roger Green  01872 862803

1st Friday of the month (may be more frequent in summer).  Calendar of walks is published on inside back cover of the newsletter.   Look out for starting times as they may vary according to venue.  These longer walks are for those who like a challenge!

January New Year Lunch

No Sunday Lunch in January, instead, why not book for the three course New Year Lunch at The Royal Duchy Hotel, Falmouth, open to all on Wednesday 28th January?   Contact Bill Brown for full information, pricing and reservations: (01872) 273411

Tennis Group

The Tennis Group meet in Boscawen Park at 2pm on Thursday afternoons, weather permitting. Usually about six to eight of us turn up on a sunny day.  The dedicated of us continue to play into the Autumn months, (again, weather permitting).  Some players seem to want to go on through the winter, and there is no particular reason why we should not continue if we have a few fine Thursdays, so watch this space!

Holiday Group  (previously known as Travel Group)

We were delighted to see sixteen members for our inaugural meeting. Possible destinations discussed for next April/May  were Paris, Barcelona,  Prague,  Amsterdam; for short  two to five day breaks; later on Germany to see the Rhine in Flames.  English Holidays suggested were the Malverns and The Hampton Court Flower Show.  For Winter or early Spring, favourites were Tunisia , Cyprus, and the Greek Islands for longer holidays.

At the second meeting at the British Legion club on 26th September, eleven members attended and favoured trips to Barcelona, The Hampton Court Flower Show and The Rhine in flames.

I have contacted travel agents and coach companies and as yet they are unable to supply details until the end of October. Truronian Coaches did a trip to Hampton Court Flower show last year and  intend to do it again in 2009. Last year’s price was £295.   They left on Wednesday and returned on Saturday. This trip included a visit to Waddesdon Manor, a French style chateau near Aylesbury.

Weaving & Design

Under Jo Grande's guidance, this active group meet twice each month and have produced a wide range of hand crafted items, as may be seen in this recent colour picture, which was featured in  September's Newsletter, but with the limitations of the black and white printing process!

Meeting at 2.00pm every Second and Fourth Wednesday of the month, members discuss and design items they will work on and then show their handiwork at following meets.  Meeting at the leader's home, there looks to be plenty of ideas afoot.  Why not contact Jo for further information on 01209 821814.
