Aim of the University of the Third Age The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a registered charity that exists to promote the well-being of older people who are no longer in gainful employment. Originally founded in Toulouse, France in 1972 as the Université du Troisieme Age, under the leadership of Pierre Vellas, U3A activities have spread far and wide and branches are now to be found throughout the world. Here in Carrick, we take our name from the local District, where our membership is approaching 800 members, with this number continuing to grow. U3A Carrick Organisation The organisation aims to provide a focal point for academic, social and recreational interests through the operation of activity groups, details of which may be found on the Groups page. Wherever possible, the various Groups generally are led by U3A members, although outside tutors and specialists may be brought in from time to time, to supplement the wealth of knowledge that already exists in our midst. Most of the local and regional U3A bodies (but not all) operate under the umbrella of the Third Age Trust, which is a central coordinating organisation providing many support services and which forms a vital link between the national U3As and Government. Nominal annual subscriptions (presently £15) are paid by U3A members, of which a small part goes towards supporting the Third Age Trust, with about 80% being used to fund the multitude of U3A Group activities. General meetings are held each month by U3A Carrick. Perranarworthal Memorial Village Hall is on the first Wednesday of the month, whilst meetings in Falmouth are held in St. Mary’s Church Room, Killigrew Street, on the third Wednesday of each month for the convenience of those who find it difficult to attend the Perranarworthal meetings At these meetings, a short business session is followed by a presentation on a selected topic of general interest. Exceptions are our AGM in April, and the December Meeting, both at Perranarworthal, when we entertain and are entertained. Earlier this year we commenced an additional monthly meeting in Truro Town Hall, held on the fourth Tuesday afternoon, starting at 2.00 pm, where a similar format ensues. Check the Diary pages for details of the forthcoming meetings and speakers.
