Grey majority rules in Cornwall

According to a recent BBC survey, Cornwall has, the highest proportion of retirement age residents in the UK.    Chloe Axford, reporting for BBC News South West,  spoke to a group of the county's older residents who are an example of how life starts at sixty!

Chloe spoke with Chairman Tony Herring, who described some of our some of 750 members' activities..

"We had a chap of 91 who was leading the rambling group and another chap in his 80s who flies his own plane and does abseiling," he said.   "I play tennis with an 85-year-old doctor's wife - we've got some pretty active octogenarians."

It is no wonder the social organisation, which is open only to retired people, is thriving in the Carrick area.

BARBARA SCAMMELL

"CREATIVE WRITING" & PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

Barbara Scammell, who was a founder member and Life President of U3A Carrick, left us £2000 in her will. She was always especially interested in literature. She ran Creative Writing and Poetry Groups for a long time. We thought it would be appropriate to organise a Creative Writing Competition in her memory. This was first suggested in our May newsletter.

Some people have sent in poetry, some have sent in prose and some have sent both poetry and prose. Since we have a sufficiently large entry , it has been decided to separate the competition into two groups and have both a Poetry winner and a Prose winner as well!    We also intend to publish them as a booklet, following the adjudication.

A Photography competition was also launched in Barbara's memory on the theme of "My Cornwall"   Entries were coordinated by Gilbert Rimes, who arranged for independent adjudication and a cup and photographic vouchers will be awarded to successful entrants.

The results will be announced at our Truro Meeting on Tuesday, December 16th at 2.00pm. when the winners of each of these competitions will be presented with trophies and cash prizes.
